Decorative rock and barks have many uses and purposes in landscape! Rock is great in borders, as an accent, dry river beds, in xeriscaping in lieu of grass, or just a big boulder to accent your beautiful yard. Rock and bark both are great at retaining moisture in the soil and they both create a protective barrier between the soil and air to help prevent/slow down weed germination. Bark planted in beds and around other plant materials helps add acid to the soil as it breaks down, cools the soft and adds a softer, woodland effect to your yard.
